Xtended is a project on the extension of geographical space into hybrid environments. In the context of Deleuze’s & Guattari’s term of multiplicity, the analysis was elaborated on the applicability of fields that merge the digital, the real and the narrative milieu. The design process welled from the field of the digital map where the representation of space combines specificity and actuality on a digital plane that is open-ended in terms of intervention. Geographical digital space can host more than one coordinate system, and subscribe further information besides geospatial data. “Information” in a sense that incorporates digital substance with aesthetic perception is the final subject of the project in question. The project formed a dialogue between the digital perspective and the problematics of architectural space to conclude to the concept and pragmatics of the extension, that which extends from an existing entity. A museum extension in the above-described hybrid environment is corresponding to an open-data approach of installing and visiting digital museum exhibitions, rendering the experience open, accessible and transportable across the Xtended coordinate network.
In detail, the project of Xtended is based on an encrypted augmented coordinate system (the grid) where virtual passages are founded in order to be decrypted. The process of decryption presupposes the use of the Xtended App (Google Play/Xtended) but most importantly the actual physical presence of the sensor-carrier in the area where the Xtended space is located. Once an augmented coordinate is crossed-traced the application notifies the user and the hyperlinked Xtended space of the museum is accessible and set for navigation. While a typical museum extension is a construction planned adjacent to an existing museum edifice, the project proposes and open-ended approach of both the structural-synthetic elements of the extension itself and the potential assembly with a fore-existing museum institution. The installation of a museum extension in such a way enables also new ways of displaying different exhibition genres (such as screen-based media, digital arts, digitized ‘traditional’ forms of art, etc.) rendering thus the curate process into a fundamental stage design.
The main objective of Xtended is to present an intermediate spatial condition where navigation mutates towards a form of narration. Xtended, both in concept and in realization, is a project regarding the problematic of site-specificity (in-situ/ex-situ), the city with its existing infrastructures (virtual/real) and the active engagement of subjects with space.
ANALYSIS
The term Xtended refers to the body of research that constitutes the analysis-stage of this project. The semantic approach toward notions such as space, presence and narrative is respectively presented in three parts; the X, the Body and the Threshold. The principle concept of this tripartite analysis is that of the extension, that which transcends the fixity of reference (spatial, temporal) and establishes an open-ended mode of existence.
‘(E)xtended from cross-referenced fields and media, toward new dimensions of becoming’.

The diagram represents the basis of the theoretical analysis of the X, the Body and the Threshold followed by a series of cartographical diagrams. The initial point of this process was the node X, namely the initial marking that had to be pinpointed on the map in order to install the grid.
THE GRID

The grid is a mesh of perpendicular lines, each one of which crosses another in a distance of 16 metres (8 metres is the average range of a GPS-enabled device). Along with the grid, followed a series of diagrams that represent a qualitative assessment of the physical environment of the city. Roads, open space, water, city blocks are layered upon the grid and indicate whether an X node is suitable for installation.
THE MAP

The grid is extending and repositioned accordingly to areas of interest. The gif represents an example of a meshed installation of the grid, generated from the centres of Volos and Athens.
The area of interest that I chose to implement the project of Xtended is Volos (GR), a choice made mainly in order to facilitate the technical installation (the tests and accurate function of the GPS-enabled mobile phone application Xtended) and the presentation of this thesis. In this sense, the Xtended museum is currently in Volos but can be “transported” to any other augmented coordinates.
WHERE?
The first X is located at 39° 21' 43.85", 22° 56' 31.74", where Google Maps pinpoint the location of Volos, or to be more precise, the tag of the word Volos. From this hypothetical but very geographically accurate centre of the city of Volos, the X is placed in order to generate the grid. An X on a map, traditionally signifies that something/someone is located somewhere. From this semiotic perspective, the X pauses to be a static representation. Instead the X referent resembles a primordial and minimal grid, a pseudo-point from which lines are extended generating new X nodes/connections.
The locations of installing the spaces of the museum were chosen in order to activate areas that are very close to the city centre but with low frequency of people.
